Discovering Taipei: The Ultimate Travel Guide to Taiwan's Vibrant Capital
Taipei combines urban excitement with natural beauty, offering travelers an unforgettable blend of culture, cuisine, and adventure. From breathtaking hikes and towering skyscrapers to bustling night markets and serene temples, Taipei has something for everyone. After exploring this dynamic city, I'm excited to share the absolute best things to do in Taipei that will make your visit truly special.
1. Hike Elephant Mountain for Breathtaking Views
Kick off your Taipei adventure with an invigorating hike up Elephant Mountain. This lush trail offers stunning views of Taipei's skyline, including the iconic Taipei 101. The hike is moderately challenging with steep stairs, but the panoramic vistas are worth every step. If you're traveling with kids, note that it's not stroller-friendly—bring a baby carrier instead. Traveler Tip: Start early or go at sunset for cooler weather and magical lighting.

2. Exploring Taipei's Vibrant Night Markets
Taipei's night markets are the beating heart of the city's food culture and shopping scene. Our visit to Shilin Night Market, one of the largest and most famous, exceeded all expectations! Walking through its bustling lanes, your senses will be overwhelmed by the sights, sounds, and mouthwatering aromas.
The food options are endless - from stinky tofu and oyster omelets to bubble tea and shaved ice desserts. Beyond the incredible food stalls, you'll find amazing bargains on clothing and accessories. I was thrilled to discover stylish t-shirts for just $3!
Other notable night markets include Raohe (one of the oldest), Ningxia (food-focused), and Huaxi Street (known as "Snake Alley" for its exotic offerings).

3. Visiting the Iconic Taipei 101
Once the world's tallest building, Taipei 101 remains a symbol of modern Taiwan and offers an unparalleled perspective of the sheer size and beauty of the city below.
From the indoor and outdoor observation decks on the 89th and 91st floors, you'll gain a true appreciation for just how vast and impressive Taipei really is. On clear days, you can see all the way to the surrounding mountains that embrace the city.
Don't miss the massive wind damper on display - this 728-ton sphere helps stabilize the building during typhoons and earthquakes, showcasing Taiwan's impressive engineering capabilities.

4. Savor Taipei's Culinary Delights
Taipei is a food lover’s paradise, and we enjoyed some unforgettable meals during our stay. Some highlights include:
VG The Seafood Bar: Perfect for a nicer dinner experience, VG The Seafood Bar serves up delectable seafood dishes in an elegant setting. Their fresh catches and creative preparations make for a memorable meal.
Tamed Fox: A casual, healthy lunch spot that perfectly balances nutrition and flavor.
Veggienius: Vegetarians and vegans will love Veggienius, where plant-based dishes are prepared with creativity and flair that will satisfy even dedicated meat-eaters.
Addiction Aquatic Development: This incredible seafood market serves the freshest sushi we had during our Japan-Taiwan trip—don’t miss it! And walking through the market section to see the incredible variety of seafood is an experience in itself.

5. Shopping Adventures
Luxury Shopping Centers
For shopping enthusiasts, head to Shin Kong Mitsukoshi and Taipei 101 Mall. While these malls feature mostly luxury brands, they’re great for window shopping and spotting the latest trends in fashion. These beautiful centers are worth visiting just to admire the stunning interiors and get a sense of Taiwanese trends.
Local Shopping Districts
For more affordable and unique finds, explore Ximending (often called the "Harajuku of Taipei") and Wufenpu (a wholesale clothing area with unbeatable prices).
6. Relaxation: Taiwan's Famous Massage Culture
After days of exploring, treat yourself to a rejuvenating massage. While not as inexpensive as in some Southeast Asian countries, massage services in Taipei offer excellent value compared to Western prices.
Xiao Chun-Qiu Massage comes highly recommended with 11 locations throughout the city. They're known for reasonable prices, professional service, and consistently satisfying results - a perfect way to soothe tired muscles after climbing Elephant Mountain!
7. Experience the Maokong Gondola: Tea Culture with a View
Take a scenic ride on the Maokong Gondola to Taipei’s tea region. Enjoy breathtaking views of the city as you ascend into lush hills dotted with tea houses and restaurants—perfect for a relaxing meal with panoramic views of Taipei below. It’s a unique experience that combines nature and culture beautifully.

8. Explore Da'an District: Taipei's Cosmopolitan Heart
Da'an offers a perfect mix of shopping, dining, and cultural experiences. Stroll down tree-lined Da'an Road to discover trendy cafés, boutiques, and some of the city's best restaurants. The sprawling Da'an Forest Park provides a green oasis when you need a break from urban exploration.
9. Visit Longshan Temple
Start your day with a visit to Longshan Temple, one of Taipei’s oldest and most well-known temples. Built in 1738, its beautiful decorations and serene atmosphere provide a glimpse into the local Buddhist and Taoist practices, making it a significant cultural stop on your travel itinerary.

Practical Tips for Traveling in Taipei
Utilize the clean and efficient subway system to get around the city easily. Trains come frequently, ensuring a smooth experience.
Keep in mind that many places only accept cash, including some subway stations, so carry some local currency.
Prepare for higher prices on fruits—like those strawberries that were unexpectedly $18 -definitely not the budget-friendly snack I had planned for my fruit-loving son!
From its towering skyscrapers to its hidden temples, from world-class shopping to humble street food stalls, Taipei offers a fascinating blend of traditional and modern experiences. The city's efficient infrastructure, friendly locals, and incredible food scene make it one of Asia's most rewarding destinations.
